Westchester Weekend Updates

This holiday season is unlike any other in recent memory. But we are stronger than we think. We possess a greater capacity to be kinder than we previously thought possible. We have the ability to be fountains of love and joy for others irrespective of our circumstances (or maybe even as a result of them). I encourage everyone to hit the “Pause” button whenever you can during this Holiday Season. Take time out of the hectic weeks ahead to enjoy whatever activities we can with our family and bubble-buddies. I hope you enjoy this edition of suggestions of things to do this weekend. As usual, please be sure to check the websites or call ahead to ensure you are familiar with the prevailing Covid-19 protocols and to avoid disappointment.

 Friday, December 11

Crab Tree’s Kittle House – The cold weather is definitely a challenge for everyone trying to stay safe during these times. If outdoor dining is still on your agenda, bundle up and treat yourself and your significant other for drinks and an early dinner in Chappaqua.
Saturday, December 12

Pop-Up Holiday Ice Skating Rink – Go to Cross County Center and enjoy some outdoor holiday fun. The skating rink has been enlarged this year, and obviously social distance rules are applied. The hours on Saturday are 12 to 8pm.

Holiday on The Hill– Enjoy this holiday display hosted by the Friends of Lasdon Park & Arboretum in Katonah, featuring model trains and scheduled Santa visits. Tickets are available only online only. Visit the website to view all the Covid-19 protocols in place.

Sunday, December 13

Catskill Christmas Express– Trying to avoid spreading out on your couch and watching “The Polar Express” for the 27th time? (Who can ever really get tired of that 16 year-old “new classic”!?). Well, why not hop aboard the Catskill Mountain Christmas trip? The owners have wisely postponed its Polar Express-themed performance trip until 2021, but it is still running its open air cars for a lovely 60-minute trip in Kingston. Frigid, family fun!

DIGITAL DIAMONDS: VIRTUAL EVENTS TO SUPPORT

A Christmas Carol – One advantage of having virtual events is that we’re not constrained by our geography in what we can enjoy online. Is this just another predictable replay of “A Christmas Carol”? No – because the solo actor presenting this show since 1993 is Gerald Dickens, Charles Dickens’ great great grandson, skillfully portraying over 30 characters in a little over an hour!

Unison’s 30th Annual Craft Art and Design Fair – This event has gone online this year, so that you can browse and shop from the comfort of your home. This is a great way to support participating local artists and vendors whom you might not otherwise have known about.

5th Annual Roots n’ Ruckus Festival – Music lovers seeking familiar and fresh songs will not want to miss this live-stream of folk and roots artists brought together by the Jalopy Theatre and School of Music, the wonderfully creative Brooklyn folk/roots music mainstay. The 5-day festival, masterfully labeled in this Pandemic Era as “The ‘Stay the Folk Home’ Edition”, started on Dec. 9th and is a fund-raiser for the Jalopy. Bias Alert: My husband was born in this booming borough, and has a massive Brooklyn bias (which makes him oddly blurt out to random strangers: “You know, some historians contend that 11% of all Americans can trace their roots through Brooklyn!”).

FEATURED BUSINESS: LA DENTELLIERE

Westchester Weekend Updates

Westchester Weekend Updates

I know most of us are probably happier than ever that it’s already December so that we can ‘move on’ to 2021…but that doesn’t mean that we can’t try to make the remaining time in 2020 as memorable as possible. As we go deeper into winter, there will be more activities happening online, and so we’ve brought back our “virtual events” section and called it “Digital Diamonds”. It just seemed fitting to relaunch this since the holidays are the one time of the year that all things shiny and glittery, in any combination, are ok. Please be sure to call ahead/check websites to make reservations and to confirm Covid-19 protocols and revised schedules.

Friday, December 4

Horse Feathers – Would you like your happy hour ‘to go’? Try something from this great selection of adult beverages. With a legacy of 40 years in Tarrytown, you’ll surely be drawn back in for a great meal as well.

Saturday, December 5

White Plains Holiday Market – Visit this brand new holiday pop-up market open on December 3 through December 13, with weekend hours from 11am through 9pm.

Kathleen’s Tea Room – Why not try this cozy, English-style tea room in Peekskill for some sweet and/or savory treats and of course, tea, now celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Reservations are highly recommended, as space is limited.

Sunday, December 6

Holiday Spirit Festival– Head over to Wappingers Falls for this 16-year tradition of holiday family fun! The event is being held entirely outdoors this year. Please see the website for social distancing protocols.

Digital Diamond Virtual Events

SoJam A Capella – Our 1st Digital Diamond celebrates the raging renewed success of the storied a capella musical tradition. The “SoJam A Capella Festival” is an acclaimed annual celebration of talented a capella groups from around the world, begun in 2003. This year, for the 1st time, the jam is totally digital. A mere $35 dollar ticket gets you an All Access Pass for the entire weekend to the performances of world-famous, (instrument-less, of course) innovative groups based in Berlin, Brazil, Baltimore and beyond! Don’t miss tuning into at least some of this livestream extravaganza!
